    from samir mathur:

mogwai shocked everyone by including tallahassee on the itinerary for their latest tour, so it wasn't surprising that the beta bar, a smallish place near the college campus, was packed. support was from local favourites kill spiders, who were decent and had nice costumes and samples.

after a quiet 'hi, we're mogwai from glasgow, scotland', 'long way' began the set nice and loudly. the tracks from 'happy songs' got the best reaction, although it must be pointed out that when the opening riff to 'xmas steps' was played, i yelled out 'yes!' cos that was the one i needed to hear. just before the bass kicked in, there was a long moment of near silence, in which you could hear a lot of people talking at the back. but eventually, it turned into something beautiful and those fuckers finally shut up. barry took to the keys for 'stop coming to my house'.

stuart spoke quite a bit... 'we dont usually take off our sweaters, so we're surprised to see what our arms look like' cos it was very, very hot. he recommended everyone buy the tour ep and then sell it on ebay for three times as much. before '2 rights', they had tech trouble, so stuart was left trying to find things to talk about. 'somebody on our website asked why i always keep a toothbrush in my pocket.. why d'you think?!' was one, and 'people said we shouldnt play in florida, cos itd be weird, but it's nice'.

prior to 'mfmk' (21 minutes by my watch), he said 'this one really is our last song, i was lying when i said it before. you see, we scots are all devious liars'. of course, the song was true power.

all in all, my second mogwai show was about a million times more intimate than my first (brixton academy, nov 2001) and one of the best i've seen all year. shame they're not playing 'cody' anymore, though, isn't it?
